Commission - H's Granny by LilaeaBluecoat Commission - H's Granny by LilaeaBluecoat
Way too much procrastinating on this one!
Was a difficult picture to work with and therefore I took lots of breaks.

The style is a little different from you're used to from me. Usually I go for high-contrast, as realistic as possible style, but that just wouldn't work for this one. Partially because of the not so good reference (using more contrast would run me the risk of losing the likeness), but also because the slightly softer style fits this elderly lady.
In fact, the scan shows it even more contrasted in some parts than it is (the lighter spots on her skin for example are nót as prominent and much more subtle in the original).

Materials:
- Reference
- Hahnemühle Nostalgie A4
- Staedtler Mars Lumograph and Derwent graphite pencils 2H through 2B
- Mechanical pencils H and B 0.3 mm
- Blu-Tack, Tombow Mono Zero Eraser, rubber colour shaper, electric eraser.

I think it's very difficult portrait, because it's always hard to draw old people. And you made a wonderful job! She's so sweet and kind.:aww:

Blu-Tack is great! I used a sort of Dutch equivalent before, which works well too, but Blue-Tack is just thát bit more sticky to make it awesome!
Thanks for your comment! :D

Thanks very much Svenja! I really appreciate your sweet comment! Just wish the scan was a little less 'off', but what can you do. Glad you like it anyway! :D

Oh yeah, scanners and their agenda of screwing us artists over... :( Mine does that too. I always have to fix my scans in the computer, else they look horribly washed out. I don't know why they do that. :hmm: But yes, it looks really really good!

Indeed they do. In this case certainly! I'm glad I followed my instinct in this case, too. Don't think it would have turned out too well otherwise.

Such a great and vivid portrait !!!

And for details from my point of view : the hair is very detailed, you must have spent hours on it.The skin texture is realistic and well rendered. A bi tof shadowing around her nostrils would have made them perfect. YLooks like you've been a bit quicker on her throat than on her face, the shading is less subtle there (even if blurred for the focus). The texture of her dress is greatly rendered.

These are details, and the general impact and accuracy is wonderful, and her eyes very expressive.
Hope it helps ... A revenge for you soon ;-) Take care.

No need for revenge at all, you know I always appreciate hearing what people see in my work and your points are absolutely valid.
I'd just like to add that the throat is one of the points that looks 'off' in the scan, and actually is darker and has details such as wrinkles that don't even show up here. So keep that in mind. ;)

Thanks very much for your kind comment and thoughts on how it could be better. I appreciate it!

Glad you do appreciate, and furthermore, I know how much digitalizing can modify the rendering and tiny details. So, of course, it was only the point of view from the online version ;-)
Keep on the great art !!!

And there was me thinking you lot were only capable of growing tulips.:icontardnod:

I think the subject lends itself to the less contrasty subtle rendering and think you made the right call with this one.

It's a great happy granny picture very nicely done.:iconsmallbouncyclapplz:

I'm usually not so much a procrastinator, but for some reason did have difficulties staying focused on this one.

it was probably harder to focus because it was part of your "high-contrast drama" :D still as much as i love your contrast pictures, this one turned out really well :)

Great work on expression, hair and necklace

Only point of concern is the spots on her forehead but as u said it was the scan so probably not even a problem :D

Anyways good job yet again.

Yes the spots are really bothering me here in this scan! It's silly, whenever you wánt it to be contrasted, the scanner loses half of it, and when you want the scan to show soft shadings, it goes all contrast-y all of a sudden! :shakefist:
Thanks!!!

Hehe exactly the reason i gave up scanning :D
It seems i can get it closer to real life when i take photo's of the drawings then using my scanner.
I loose the real whites that way tho so it's not perfect either :(

So far, scanning has turned out to be the best option for me. I don't have a very good camera and the light isn't too great here either... Gonna have to live with the restrictions of scanning I'm afraid.

Can't you bring back your whites in a digital way somehow? It's too bad you lose them all!

Ye i can bring the whites out but then it looks to uneven and nothing like the real thing.
Maybe someday i'll find the right way to do it :D
