Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't I? by LilaeaBluecoat Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't I? by LilaeaBluecoat
Thanks to all the sweet people that gave me advice!! You know who you are!

This is what I've settled for. I'm satisfied enough with it. :)

Of course this is an interpretation of a minimalistic style as first (and much better) done by *IleanaHunter. 't Was a nice experiment, but more difficult than I had imagined. It can be quite hard to decide what to leave out! ;)

Materials:
- Winsor and Newton Extra Smooth Bristol Board, A4 size wide
- Tom Bow and Staedtler Mars pencils 2H through 6B
- Mechanical pencils H and B, 0.5 and 0.3 mm
- Blu-tack, Tom Bow Mono Zero eraser, Mars regular eraser
- Homemade tortillions and cotton make-up removal pads for blending.

WIP:

Thanks for looking!

Looks much better with the hair going down a bit more.
Great eyes and cool idea with the pencil :D
I can't imagine how i would try and do a self portrait so very well done

Thanks Rick!
Actually a self portrait wasn't quite as hard ad I'd imagined. Maybe the style shift also helped, but it was actually rather fun! It's good to sometimes stare oneself in the face for a long time without feeling the need to judge, if you know what I mean.

it turned out fantastic, Nathalie!:heart: it was great earlier too, but adding some more hair was really a good decision, and I just love the way you did it, preserving the minimalist style

I love it! It's so realistic even without a lot of shading :) The lips and eyes are the best :)

I often do so when I'm working on something and I need to switch quickly from one pencil to the other several times. Just easier to 'store' it there, than neatly lay it down on the table. ;)

The little bit of hair around the face is really good, it shows the face better but still isn't too much for the minimalistic style.
Looks really great!!

Thanks very much Annika! I'm happy with my choice for hair, since I do agree it helps the whole instead of (what I was afraid of) taking away from it.

I love the fact you have been influenced by a technique and still keep a sense of your own style. Clean, smooth and outrageously real!

You know, it was actually fun! I thought it would be weird to draw myself, but it actually gave me a chance to look at myself differently. There's things you notice when drawing that you completely glance over every time you look in the mirror!

Oh you know, things like moles you never noticed, or certain shapes in your face you'd missed before, and so on.
Mostly though, it just gave me a chance to look at myself without judgment. Not like when you stand in front of a mirror and comment to yourself about your big nose, or first wrinkles, or fine lips, etc... Just looking in this case. Looking, seeing, and not feeling the need to be critical. :)

I really like what you did with the hair, it helps to frame the eyes and really brings them to life. It creates a path for the eye to follow around the drawing where as before the pencil lead the eye out of the drawing. Now my eye is kept in the composition and it gets my attention for longer. Well done Nat, it's beautiful :D
